For the first time since 2007, the Eagle Rock varsity football team is competing in the playoffs. The Eagles (4-6, 3-2 in league) will travel to Canoga Park (6-4,5-1) to take on the Hunters Fri. 11/18 at 7:00 pm. "I'm happy we're in," said third year head coach Greg Pierce. "Canoga Park will be tough, and our kids will have to play fast and hard to beat them." The Eagles qualified for the playoffs by beating Roybal 44-6 on Nov. 11. That game, which was also Senior Recognition Night, was played at Don Mengel Field. Senior quarterback Jordan Hayes scored the first two touchdowns on 19- and 18-yard runs. Senior kicker Alex Pineda kicked both PATs. The Titans scored a touchdown on a long pass at the end of the first quarter to make it 14-6. The Eagles responded immediately, when junior running back Michael Green broke loose for an 80-yard touchdown run. The Eagles closed out the first half scoring when senior running back Nico Pulido dove over from the one-yard line. In the second half the Eagles defense scored two TD's. Pineda scooped up a Titan fumble and returned it 21 yards for a score, and later Paul Gandara returned an interception for a touchdown, his second of the season. The Eagles closed out the scoring with a safety. Submitted by Steve Calhoun - Counselor, Asst. Athletic Director

The game will kickoff at 7:00 pm at Don Mengel Field and has major playoff implications for both teams, as both teams need to win to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Panthers have won the last three meetings in the series. The Eagles last win came in 2007 in a game that saw the Panthers come up short of the winning touchdown on the final play of the game. The Eagles are coming off a 27-21 victory over the Wilson Mules that went down to the final play of the game on Fri. night Oct. 28. The game, which was played before a huge crowd on Homecoming Night, and was the first night game played under the permanent lights, was tied at 21, with under a minute to play. The Mules were driving for the apparent winning touchdown and had the ball on the Eagle Rock 25-yard line. The Eagles needed a big play defensively and got it,when sophomore defensive back Paul Gandara interecepted a Wilson pass and returned it 88 yards for the touchdown that gave the Eagles the lead and ultimately the win. "All I saw was the ball, and I reacted to it," said Gandara, whose older brothers Eugene and Phillip also played for the Eagles and were in attendance at the game. "Once I got it I just started to run. At midfield, I thought I had a chance to score and just ran." That Paul was covering the Mules' best receiver was one of the second half adjustments Coach Greg Pierce and his coaching staff made."We had moved Paul on their go-to receiver (Andrew Urbina). That scheme worked to perfection, and the close coverage paid off." Among the highlights for the Eagles this night was a 45-yard touchdown pass from Bennie Macias to Peter Amaya. Macias, a junior, is the third-string quarterback, but has been playing receiver a lot this year. He took the ball on a reverse and tossed the ball to a wide open Amaya for the TD. Eagle Rock's JV team won big to move to 6-1 overall (3-0) in Northern League play. The JV team will be looking for a third straight win over Franklin, and a third straight league title. That game will kickoff at 4:00 p.m. on 11/4. Submitted by Steve Calhoun Counselor, Asst. Athletic Director Posted Wednesday, November 4, 2011
Eagle Rock's varsity football team hosts the Wilson Mules Friday night Oct. 28. Kickoff will be at 7 in what will not only be the homecoming game, but the first night football doubleheader at Eagle Rock's Don Mengel Field. For the Eagles, with a 1-1 record in Northern League play, the game has huge playoff implications. In addition to the game and the homecoming frestivities, there will be a pregame dinner honoring the newest three members of the Eagle Rock Sports Hall of Fame, who will serve as the grandmarshals during homecoming. The latest inductees are Curt Clinite (Winter '53 class) Steve Wahl (W'69) and Rhuben Williams (2000). Mr. Clinite was the quarterback on the 1952 Eagles team, and was also a pole vaulter of note. Mr. Wahl was a star quarterback and baseball player, was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the major league baseball draft, but opted to go to UCLA where he played instead. He returned to Eagle Rock as a PE and football coach in 1994, and established a record for the most wins as an Eagle Rock head football coach. He also called the winning play in the Eagles' thrilling comeback win over Marshall in the 2005 City Championship game. Mr. Williams played fullback and linebacker under Coach Wahl and was a very good player. However in track, he was truly outstanding. He is the only Eagle to win a state championship, and he did that twice in the shot put. He also took second in the state in the discus one year, which is even more impressive when you realize he had never thrown the discus before. An outstanding student as well, he continued to shot put at UC Berkeley. The Eagles dropped their last contest to Marshall 44-17. The game was competitive until the end, when Marshall's offence got in a groove and could not be stopped. The Eagles actually led 7-6 at one point in the first quarter after senior quarterback Jordan Hayes' 20-yard scoring pass to junior fullback Duncan Lord. Alex Pineda's 30-yard field goal midway in the third quarter cut Marshall's lead to 24-10, and Jordan Hayes' 17-yard run on the final play of the 3rd quarter got the Eagles to within 31-17, but they could get no closer. The JV team defeated Marshall 30-14 at Don Mengel Field on Thursday, Oct.27. Jurior quarterback Joe McGuan threw two touchdown passes to his twin brother, Russell, the day after their birthdays to lead the Eagles. The win imrproved the team's record to 5-1 (2-0 in Northern League play). Submitted by Steve Calhoun Counselor, Assistant Athletic Director Posted Wednesday, October 26, 2011
The Eagle Rock Varsity football team will host the Marshall Barristers Friday October 21st at 3:00. The game figures to be the last day game at Don Mengel Field in the foreseeable future, as Eagle Rock will turn on its lights for the first time on October 28 for the Homecoming Game. The Eagles are coming off a 14-0 upset of the previously undefeated Lincoln Tigers on Friday, October 14, in a game played at Lincoln’s Kenny Washington Field. Junior defensive back Andrew Gonzalez’s interception thwarted Lincoln’s first drive. It was one of three turnovers the Eagle defense forced on the night. The Eagles scored shortly afterwards when senior quarterback Jordan Hayes scored on a five yard run. Alex Pineda’s extra point was good, and the Eagles led 7-0 early in the first quarter. Neither team was able to mount a scoring threat for the rest of the first half.. The Eagle defense continued to frustrate the Tiger offense with big plays. The only other scoring opportunity came on the last play of the half when the Tigers partially blocked a short field goal by Pineda. In the second half, the Eagle defense continued to tame the Tigers. The Eagles finished off the scoring in the final minute when Hayes ran in from from two yards out. Hayes finished the game with 170 yards rushing. Head Coach Greg Pierce was extremely pleased with his defense’s effort. “They played outstanding!” he said enthusiastically. He stressed that it was an overall effort, but when pushed, he conceded that his linebackers, seniors Gerardo Suarez and Gabriel Gazcon, and junior Jesus Cardoza were vital to the effort. Defensive coordinator JJ Guthrie (ER Class of 2001) was also pleased with the effort. “The whole defense played with focus, and they executed their responsibilities. That was as close to a mistake free game as we’ve played. We’ll need to do that or more next week [against Marshall.]” The JV team defeated Lincoln 24-7 and is now 4-1 on the season.
