Course Title: Beginning Band
Course Description:
This course will expand the student's knowledge and appreciation of music through the study of a wind or percussion instrument. The students will learn basic music reading skills and apply these skills to study and perform music of many genres and composers. They will also study improvisation and the vernacular of different musical styles. They will learn the principles of musicianship. We will incorporate examples of world music through the ages and explore how this music helps us to understand various cultures. Beginning Band is being offered through the Performing Arts Department of Eagle Rock High School. All projects will be taught to the California Music State Standards.

MYP Aims Addressed by this Course: The major emphasis of this course is to provide a foundation of instrumental music concepts and skills intellectually and experientially. Students will learn to play wind and percussion instruments. Emphasis is on (1) developing general musical literacy (2) mastering the concepts and physical demands of playing an instrument (3) working cooperatively with other student musicians. The course serves as a prerequisite for all advanced music courses. The class will be taught to the state standards and be taught in a sequenced order.
Participation in MYP arts should enable students to:

  • Acquire and develop skills needed for the creation of performing art work.
  • Use the language, concepts and principles of performing art work.

  • Develop receptiveness to performing art forms across time, place and cultures, and perceive the significance of these art forms as an integral part of life.

Musical Terms

Italian expression markings for tempo, volume, emotion and form are examined.

These are applied to the students' performances of songs.
