MYP Course Outline - Spanish I

Course Title: Spanish 1
Course Description:
Learners comprehend and produce (functions) learned words and phrases (text-types) dealing with discrete elements of life (content)
in highly predictable common daily settings (contexts/accuracy)
In Spanish I, the students will learn Spanish using the four basic skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The students will accomplish this with the use of text material, recorded materials, and various other written materials and authentic realia.
Both written and oral tests will assess the students' proficiencies in the reading, writing and listening skills. Students are expected to participate on a regular basis. The students will be learning primarily the present indicative tense
along with the present progressive and the use of participles. The course will be aligned with the California Foreign Language Standards as well as with the California Foreign Language Framework (The Language Learning Continuum). The language proficiency of all students entering the course will begin in Stage 1 (Formulaic Language) and will be developed to reach the Stage 2 (Created Language).

MYP Aims Addressed by this Course:
The aims of the teaching and study of modern foreign languages are to:

  • enable the student to use language(s) effectively as a means of practical communication, providing a sound base of communication skills necessary for future study, work and leisure
  • enable the student to understand the nature of language and the process of total language learning, which comprises the integration of linguistic, cultural and social components
  • enable the student to develop an appreciation of a variety of literary and non-literary texts
  • offer insight into the cultural characteristics of the communities where the language(s) is (are) spoken
  • encourage an awareness and understanding of the perspectives of people from other cultures
  • promote involvement with different communities, where relevant
  • provide access to varied sources of information
  • foster curiosity, a lifelong interest and enjoyment in language learning.
