MYP Course Outline

Level: (9,10)
Course Title: Physical Education- Intermediate Program
Course Description: The Eagle Rock intermediate physical education program is designed to offer students a wide variety of opportunity to understand that physical activity provides enjoyment, challenges, self-expression, and social interaction. An emphasis will be placed on rules and procedures for the field, gymnasium, and courts with safety placed at the highest importance. Also how to use equipment and space properly, while learning the importance of playing, cooperating, and respecting others regardless of personal differences (e.g., gender, ethnicity, disability) during physical activity. 9th and 10th graders will work on personal fitness goals, and concentrate on team sports in an effort to build cooperation and teamwork skills.


MYP Aims Addressed by this Course:
The aims of the teaching and study of MYP physical education are to encourage and enable students to develop:

  • an appreciation and understanding of the value of physical education and its relationship to a healthy, balanced lifestyle
  • an interest in the promotion of health and wellness
  • the motivation to participate fully in all aspects of physical education
  • their optimal level of physical fitness
  • effective communication strategies, verbal, non-verbal and written
  • the skills and understanding necessary to participate successfully in a variety of physical activities, for example, learning, practising, refining, adapting, thinking, interacting
  • the ability to reflect critically on all aspects of physical education, including being a critical performer
  • an understanding of international perspectives on physical activity, sport and health education
  • a lifelong interest in and enjoyment of physical activities as a participant.

Orientation

How can you help create a safe environment in which everyone feels comfortable participating in physical education class?

Environments-
Environment will be our first area of interaction. The students will explore Eagle Rock Jr/Sr High school in addition to Yosemite Park recreation area.

Students will be assessed using Social Skills and personal engagement by:
1.Teacher observation
2. Written reflection assignment.
3. Exploration Assignment Project
4. Navigation Map Creation Assignment.

Weeks 4-10

 

Personal Fitness

 

 

How can you improve your personal fitness skills?
What is your resting heart rate?
What is your target heart rate?
How can I use my physical fitness test scores to improve my fitness levels?

Health and Social Education will be the focus for our area of interaction because the direct connection between fitness and health.

Students will be assessed using the fitness tests from the California State fitness test. Students will be quizzed on intermediate strength terms, and fitness concepts and terminology.
Students will calculate resting, and target heart rates.
9th and 10th graders will keep a written fitness log and journal showing their personal fitness goals and improvement.

Weeks 11-21

Team Sports
Students will use the skills they learned in middle years programs to play larger full team games. Sports will include soccer, softball, basketball, flag-football, and volley ball.

Community and Service
By using community and service as our area of interaction we can take advantage of being a 7-12 grade school by using 9-12 grade PE students to mentor and teach the younger students the correct way to cooperate and work as a team.
This will benefit both the middle and intermediate level PE students.

Students will be assessed using teacher observations (focusing on cooperation, communication, and teamwork), individual goal setting,
Students as a small group will create and design a game to teach to the 7th and 8th graders in an effort to learn to mentor and build leadership qualities. Students must develop rules, and teach strategies that will help the 7th and 8th graders be successful in their game.

Net and Racquet Sports

 

 

 

How can you improve your individual racquet skills?
How can you improve your individual competitive skill level and performance as it relates to racquet skills?

Health and Social Education
Racquet sports are great life long games that students can do throughout their lives. Tennis and paddle courts are available to the public free our low cost, and are an easy way to promote life long fitness goals.

Students will be assessed using specific (criterion based) videotape analysis for their tennis serve, and forehand stroke.
Students must also analyze other students videos in order to pick out strengths and flaws with their peers serve and forehand strokes.
Students will be given written assessments that cover court layouts for singles and doubles games, including scoring, and rules.

Weeks 32-40

 

Movement and Dance

 

 

How can you use music and rhythm to create a routine that is ascetically pleasing to those watching?
How is creating a dance routine within a group similar to the design process you  would use creating a group project in English,  history, or science?

Human Ingenuity
This will be our area of interaction because students will have to create their own movement routines.

Students will be assessed using a teacher performance checklist, peer evaluation, and self-reflection project.
