Course Title: Health Science
Course Description:
The health education program involves students, school staff, families, and the community. These groups work together to prevent health problems when possible and to address them in a systematic way when they do occur. All students are engaged in activities that foster the development of each individual’s optimal physical mental and emotional well being leading to health choices and lifelong health. The health education standards address the four unifying ideas for health literacy found in the health framework for California Public Schools.

  • Acceptance of personal responsibility for lifelong health
  • Respect for and promotion of the health of other.
  • An understanding of the process of growth and development; and
  • Informed use of health related information, products, and services.

The aims of the teaching and study of MYP physical education/health are to encourage and enable students to develop:

  • an appreciation and understanding of the value of physical education and its relationship to a healthy, balanced lifestyle
  • an interest in the promotion of health and wellness
  • the motivation to participate fully in all aspects of physical education
  • their optimal level of physical fitness
  • effective communication strategies, verbal, non-verbal and written
  • the skills and understanding necessary to participate successfully in a variety of physical activities, for example, learning, practicing, refining, adapting, thinking, interacting
  • the ability to reflect critically on all aspects of physical education, including being a critical performer
  • an understanding of international perspectives on physical activity, sport and health education
  • a lifelong interest in and enjoyment of physical activities as a participant.

(Weight Management)

How to use a Healthy balanced Diet?
What are the signs of  the 4 main eating disorders?

Students will calculate their daily caloric needs, using an online web site. Students will develop a plan for starting a healthy restaurant, including a menu for a restaurant from the culture of their choice using Microsoft word, power point, and Microsoft Excel to sort quantity of dishes sold.
