MYP Study/Presentation/Tech Course Outline

Level: 10th Grade

Course Title: 10th Grade Study Presentation/Tech

Course Description: Study Presentation/Tech is a required course for all 10th grade students at Eagle Rock Junior/Senior High School and is composed of three essential elements:  Approaches to Learning (study/learning Presentation/Techniques), Independent study, and Design Presentation/Technology.

Approaches to Learning: focuses on metacognitive skills, where students will:

  • learn (or review) specific learning strategies and study skills,
  • practice applying these strategies, and
  • analyze their success or challenges in using these strategies

Each 88 minute class will begin with a 15 minute mini-lesson focusing on one study skill or learning strategy, as guided by the IB Approaches to Learning, Each two-week unit will focus on a specific skill set, including but not limited to:

  • Time management, documentation, scheduling, and prioritization (Organization),
  • Active listening, note taking, re-phrasing, vocabulary skills (Communication)
  • Selecting roles in a group, leadership, teamwork (Collaboration)
  • Logical thinking, following instructions, task analysis creating procedures, studying for tests (Problem Solving)
  • Basic research skills, decoding vs. reading comprehension, outlining, citations, determining appropriate resources (Information Literacy)
  • Analysis of results, independent planning, metacognition (Reflection)
  • Basic Math Skills, scientific method, reading and writing skills (Subject Specific Tasks).

Independent Study: allows the students time every day to work independently on schoolwork.  Approximately 40 – 50 minutes will be allowed for this purpose, in which students will set a goal for the time, chose a study skill to use to complete that task, and then reflect at the end of the independent time on whether they accomplished their goal within the planned time, and how well the chosen study skill worked in completing their task.  Students will maintain a notebook in the class, allowing them to observe their progress in meeting goals and using the applied skills.

Design Presentation/Technology:  10th graders will receive at least 50 hours of design and Presentation/Technology training in the study Presentation/Tech class, as well as spend time working on their 10th grade projects.  The last 15 – 20 minutes of each class, plus one full class for each two week cycle will be dedicated to the students working individually and in groups, creating and evaluating products and/or solutions to various problems and challenges.  As the year progresses, students will select and work on a long-term project, which will allow them to explore the IB design cycle in depth.

MYP Presentation/Technology Goals:

  • Develop an appreciation of the significance of Presentation/Technology for life, society and the environment
  • Use knowledge, skills and Presentation/Techniques to create products/solutions of appropriate quality
  • Develop problem-solving, critical and creative thinking skills through the application of the IB design cycle
  • Develop respect for others’ viewpoints and appreciate alternative solutions to problems
  • Use and apply information and communication Presentation/Technology effectively as a means to access, process and communication information, and to solve problems.
