What’s Rocking at Eagle Rock Jr./Sr. HS?

ERHS sent a Happy New Year postcard to several local businesses on Colorado Blvd., Eagle Rock Blvd., York Blvd., and Figueroa Blvd. to wish a happy & safe 2017, invite them to visit our website, and publicize our 90th anniversary. Senior Rachel Barcena created “Winter” using water color paints as an assignment for Mr. Kaufman. It was also displayed during our Winter Showcase on December 9, 2016.

Here’s hoping your Winter Break is as scenic and reflectiveVisit our website (erhs.lasud.net) and/or Facebook Page to see and share other examples of arts, athletics, and academics!

Respect our School & Community

Celebrations

One way to respect the Rock is by sharing some of our celebrations:

  • ERHS students and adults donated blankets clothing, food, money, time, toys and more to Fire House 42’s Spark of Love, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Recycled Resources’ Winter Shelter, Second Families for Syrian refugees, and St. Dominic’s Hope Dinner. Students are documenting their work and reflecting in ManageBac.
  • Grants & Donations Abound!  Congratulations to Ms. Gallegos, Coach R. Martinez, Ms. Sanchez, and Ms. Silverman for earning donations of money and/or materials from GoFundMe and Loew’s. Our Middle School Flag Football team and principal also received all expenses-paid trip to compete in the NFL’s Flag Football Championships in Orlando, FL, from three different foundations.
  • Posse Scholarships provide full tuition; we have two recipients so far: Tim Kim and Trishabelle Manzano for Middlebury University.
  • Two seniors, Angel Mayoral & Alex Silva got $3K scholarships each from the United States Forestry Service’s Generation Green to Joshua Tree for 5 days in December 2016.

So What:

  • Adult attendance impacts consistency for instruction and operations.

Now What:

  • How might we collectively improve attendance for faculty and staff to support students?

Challenge Learning

Class Periods Conversations

In March 2017, teachers will vote for the number of class periods offered in 2017-18.

Here’s what:

  • TEACHER INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES: Per Article IX of the UTLA contract, teachers need to teach a minimum of 1550 minutes per week, and we were at approximately 1470 with ERHS’ previous implementation of the 8 class periods.
  • SURVEY FINDINGS: 85% of families, 72% of families, and 60% of students do not want to keep ERHS’ current implementation of our 7 period schedule.

So what:

  • INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB): As an IB World School, students take eight subjects concurrently. Regardless of the number of class periods, we will continue implementing IB. We receive additional funding and autonomy for IB.
  • CLASS SIZES: District norms are based on 6 period days.

Now what:

  • In January and February, we will host a series of listening forums.
  • Begin considering how these questions might impact your decision-making:
    • Who are we serving by doing this work?
    • How will this decision bring teachers, students, parents, community members, and district leadership together?
    • What are we hoping to accomplish as an IB World School?
    • What is our moral imperative as a public school?

Kindness Matters

Self-Care

A “Gift of Words” became a part of my holiday tradition when my writing teacher, Jane Hancock, taught it to me a decade ago. Through words, my intention is to share cheer and laughter as we open 2017 with reflection. To the tune of “Auld Lang Syne”

Should our alma mater be forgot

And never brought to mind?

Should our alma mater be forgot

And days of Eagle Rock Go!

For Eagle Rock, my dear

For Eagle Rock,

We’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet,

For Eagle Rock!

Use the winter recess to refresh and renew with loved ones. Remember to take care of yourself; it matters to me and others. J

Happy New Year!

Manigong Bagong Taon!

Feliz Ano Nuevo!

Thank you for affecting positive change and choosing Eagle Rock Jr./Sr. HS.

What are some of the good things that you are doing to make our school, community, and world a better place for you and others?
