The Eagle Rock girls soccer team concluded with a 6-0 loss to the Palisades Dolphins in a quarterfinal playoff game played at Palisades on the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 20. Pali led 1-0 at the half, but right before the half, senior sweeper Patty Aguilar, the Eagles' best defender, reinjured her ankle, and was unable to continue. "They were a very talented and deep team," said Coach Martin Kelley of the Dolphins after the game.

The Eagles advanced by beating Reseda 2-1 in a game played at Eagle Rock on Wednesday, Feb. 18. Reseda took a 1-0 lead right before the end of a wild first half, which saw both teams make several good shots, and both goalies make saves on several of those shots.

Eagle Rock goalie Amanda Fetter made a great save early in the second half to stop a Reseda goal kick, stretching to her fullest height, then tipping the ball up like a volleyball setter before catching it.

The Eagles tied the game 1-1 about 15 minutes into the second half when sophomore forward Lauren Jorgenson (a third generation Eagle) blasted one in from about 40 yards out. Then a minute later, Sara Norwall gave the Eagles the lead with a goal on an indirect kick.

The Eagles finished the regular season as the Northern League champs. with a record of 8-0-2. The biggest games of the year were against perennial power Belmont. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie at Belmont in their first contest. In the rematch, the Eagles won 1-0, when Sara Norwall scored in the second half off a looping pass from midfield from Patty Aguilar.

The girls JV soccer team won its first Northern League championship by compiling a 9-0-1 mark. The team, led by freshmen goalies Olivia Kenney and Jessica Lopez, did not allow a goal during the season.

The Eagle Rock Girls Soccer league play has come to an end and the team has emerged victorious. The Sisters of the Pitch scored 31 goals and allowed only 5 beating each Northern League team twice* on their way to the title. To go along with a 26 goal differential, the solid defensive unit on this team of heroes, held their opponents to but a 1/2 goal a game.

After wins over Marshall and Belmont(as noted in the last soccer update)the Lady Eagles hosted Franklin, but generous these hosts were not , taking it to the 3rd place finishing Panthers with a 4-1 win. The game was highlighted by freshman Vanessa Capra's hat trick and stellar defense by Patty Aguilar, Courtney Luengo and Yurivia Real.

The Tigers of Lincoln were next up and became the Eagles first league shutout. Scoring duties were shared by Julie Biegner, Sara Norwall and Schyna Pour. The 3-0 win was punctuated by a Red card received by Ms. Aguilar during a flailing exchange of emotion in the box that then counted her out for the teams' next victim ... Wilson.

The first half of the season was complete when the whistle sounded and our Eaglettes rode home in style finishing the first half of the season full with W's even after spotting the Wilson team a first minute goal on a rare defensive break down. Capra, again led the way with two goals and an assist with additional finishes by Norwall and defender Real in this 4-1 victory where all squad members were able to contribute.

The first game of the second half versus Marshall on artificial turf at the Riverside Field was the nail biter. The Ladies, looking smart in their Kelly green away uniforms, out shot the Barristers 23 to 1 but did not find net until the 74th minute when Sara Norwall pushed a ball right, in the box, finding a hungry enough Helen Pacheco for the score to finally put an end to the drama.

Games against Belmont are always eventful. Working the offside trap with aplomb but without the speed and or players to gain advantage, the Sentinels gave up the first goal in the 13th minute to captain Tania Limas, the second one to 4 year varsity starter and captain Vickie Biegner in the 27th minute and then a third one and second on the day for Ms. Limas in the 65th minute. Again, all hands were on deck for this game as our Lady Eagles gave the downtown green and black their second loss of the season, and the Eagles, a victory that marks the first time our girls soccer program has defeated Belmont twice(two years ago in winning league we tied them and beat them) in league play. Elizabeth Cecconi had 6 saves on the day and notched her 3rd league shutout.

Second round against Franklin garnered another shut out for Cecconi and company with goals scored by Vickie Biegner, defender Dalia Alonso and stopper Schyna Pour in a 3-0 win.

Lincoln played their Tiger ball again, but refraining from retaliation, the Green and White coasted to a 4-0 ganado. The Eagle defense was extraordinary and the goal scoring was shared by seniors Biegner, Pacheco, Rodriguez-Newhall and Limas.

Wilson was the last victim in a near perfect season where Rodriguez- Newhall, Capra and Limas each had 2 goals in the 6-1 win

* What kept the team from a 10-0 record in league, and what became a lesson for coaches and players alike, was a forfeit in the first game against Marshall for the infraction of playing on a team outside of school during the season. We know what this team is - all is forgiven - and we now look forward to the playoffs.

My so called 'Sisters of the Pitch' received the 6 seed out of 32 and play South Gate on Friday the 15th of February in a home game at 3:00 p.m. See you there and congratulations to coach Zuber and all the girls!

The Eagle Rock Girls Soccer season is well under way. As league begins the Lady Eagles are finding themselves in the driver's seat after last Saturday's shootout victory over host Garfield in the final to 'seal the deal' in the team's first ever tournament championship. With an overall record of 10-5 and a 2-0 league start, the 'princesses of the pitch' are sharpening their claws for a hard fought dream season in league.

The team is led by an array of returning seniors including 4 year varsity players Vicki Biegner and Helen Pacheco as well as last years first team all league players Tania Limas and Schyna Pour. The seniors are rounded out by left side forward Amanda Rodriguez - Newhall, stalwart defender Courtney Luengo and with additional play from Nerly Castillo, Itzel Garces and Megan Megante.

The juniors come armed with all league standouts Patty Aguilar and Theresa Kelley with super input from Paula Escobar and Adalia Vidarte.

In the sophomore arena the team is led by second year varsity players all-rounder Julie Biegner and goalie extraordinaire Elizabeth Cecconi with Yurivia Real, a new player to the team, who is playing some of the best defense in the league.

Last but not least are the freshmen. Vanessa Capra and Sara Norwall (as was stated in the LAUSD Soccer Kick-off Show) have coach Rick Zuber "giddy" as he tries to harness the speed, quickness and skills of these young and talented players. Both girls are having a tremendous impact on the program and as stellar team players their presence bodes well for the future of Eagle Rock Girls Soccer.

A quick recap of the season to date has easy pre-season wins over LACES and West Adams Prep and tough 2-0 loss to Cleveland. The Sylmar Tournament was next on the agenda and again these Eagles made the semi-finals after victories over Westchester and North Hollywood, a brilliant 1-0 loss to Taft and a shootout quarterfinal victory over non City Section Alemany. Unable to match last years 2nd place finish in a rain soaked dual pitting a Lindsey Zuber led team against host Sylmar, our girls settled for 4th place this year after a second loss to Cleveland and a consolation loss to Birmingham.

League is now in full swing and the 2-0 start includes commanding wins over last year's Northern League champ Marshall by a score of 3-1 followed by a 3-1 outcome over nemesis Belmont. Although our girls beat Franklin 2-1 in the first round of the Garfield tourney this year, the game was a battle, and well played, and stands to be an exciting rematch in the home game of the week on Wednesday January 16th at 2:30 up on the football field.

The Eagle Rock Girls soccer team travels to Hollywood on Thursday, Feb. 15 for a first round playoff game against the Sheiks. The game will determine future placement in the playoffs for both teams.

The Eagles finished the regular season with a 13-4-1 record, and finished third in the Northern League behind Marshall and Belmont. The Northern League was very competitive this year, and proof of that is the fact that the Eagles defeated Marshall once and tied Belmont.

In the last regular season game of the year, the Eagles beat Lincoln 2-0. The goals were scored juniors Vicky Bieg0ner and Helen Pacheco.

Coming off a huge win over Marshall earlier this week, there is no rest for the Eagle Rock girls soccer team as they meet Belmont Wednesday afternoon at Belmont. The game is scheduled to start at 2:30.

The game has implications for the Northern League championship. Eagle Rock is currently 1/2 game behind first place Marshall, while Belmont is right behind Eagle Rock, 1 1/2 games behind. Belmont still has a game left against Marshall.

Earlier this season the Eagles and Sentinels tied 1-1. This extended the Eagles unbeaten streak against the Sentinels to three straight. Amanda Rodriguez-Newhall scored the tying goal for Eagle Rock with about two minutes left.

The Eagles prevailed against Marshall 1-0 at Eagle Rock on 1/29. Amanda Rodriguez-Newhall scored the only goal of the game before halftime, after the Eagles had just missed a couple of good scoring opportunities (including a shot that hit the crossbar) in the first half. The Eagles kept the pressure on in the second half with several good shots on goal. The defense, spearheaded by Lindsey Zuber, who played the whole game as goalie, shut down Marshall's offense.

In the JV game, the Eagles won their second game in a row by defeating Marshall 1-0. Natalia Sanchez scored early in the first half for the Eagles, and the defense made it count. Golie Megan Magante made a great diving save to thwart Marshall's best scoring chance and preserve the shutout.
