THE CATCHER IN THE RYE by J.D. Salinger

After being kicked out of three previous schools, sixteen-year-old Holden Caulfield learns his failing grades are getting him expelled from his latest prep school in Pennsylvania.  Rather than wait the few days until the end of the term at Christmas, Holden decides to ditch his “phony” friends at school and go underground in New York City, where he has several adventures and misadventures and tries to figure out his place in the universe.
